Hanover are a four piece pop/electronic band from Liverpool made up by Calan Nickle, Joel James, Dan Hancox and James Rookyard. They have recently released a new single “Saw You Alone” which is available to listen to now.
Joel was kind enough to answer a few questions for us, here is what he had to say.
How did you all meet?
“I met Dan and Calan years ago through us both being in bands. It got to a point where we started writing music together and eventually formed Hanover. We recently met James through mutual friends and decided to become a four piece”
Who were your influences growing up?
“As a kid I was brought up on a lot of 70s/80s music. I remember being around 8 years old and dancing round the kitchen to Fantasy by Earth, Wind & Fire. Discovering the internet around the same age acted as a major catalyst for me in discovering new music, and throughout high school I pretty much listened to anything I could. I’d say in initially doing so, I was influenced a lot by the likes of Keane, Hard-FI and Gorillaz”
What was your first gig?
“The first gig I ever played was at O2 Academy Liverpool in 2009 to about 6 people, all of whom were family and friends. Everyone in the band was majorly stressing except me due to taking a bit more than the average dose of Kalms tablets before the gig. It was a really chill gig for me to say the least”
Describe your music in 3 words?
“Electronic, Nostalgic, Wavy”
What has been your best and worst gig?
“Personally, I think our best show was at Borderline in London during our recent tour with our mates in The Shades. Every date on that tour was amazing though as, even though we were providing tour support, we were welcomed with open arms which was more than we expected. Our worst gig was probably our first ever show due to a combination of nerves which stopped us from enjoying ourselves and, ultimately, putting on a good performance”
Can you tell us a bit about your music?
“Our music combines anthemic hooks with nostalgic ambience and big synth sounds. It’s our own mix of indie, synth pop and dance”
Are there any plans to release any EPs or singles soon?
“We’re planning on releasing another single in the coming weeks and more music to follow not long afterwards”
What are your plans for the rest of 2018?
“We’ve got some more local shows lined up including Rivfest in Warrington where we’ll be performing with our good friend Mo Jamil (The Voice Winner 2017) as his backing band. We’re really looking forward to being a part of Rivfest as well as playing alongside Fickle Friends who are headlining. As well as writing as much as possible, we’re collaborating with other artists we know which is a first for us and something we’re really keen to do”
