Manchester based War Stripes are a three-piece alternative rock/ progressive rock band made up by Aaron (Vocals/Guitarist), Ciro (Bass) and Kai (Drums). A recently new band to the scene but one I can see making huge music waves in Manchester and beyond.
We had a few questions to ask the lads, here’s what they had to say.
How did you guys meet?
Kai – “We all met on OkCupid.com – we’re just 3 guys looking for a good time ;)”
Aaron – “haha, I remember it slightly differently. I got in touch with bassist Ciro based on an advert he posted on joinmyband.com. He was looking for a ‘dirty’ sounding rock and roll band and I liked the sound of it, I always wanted to sing and play guitar for that kind of band so reached out – although since then we’ve refined our own sound a little bit. We chatted for a while before putting a new ad out for a drummer and Kai jumped on board! The three of us met at Pirate Studios Manchester for a jam and haven’t looked back”
What are your influences?
Ciro – “I was pretty big on heavy metal, punk and Alternative, bands like Godsmack, Flyleaf, No Trigger and Arnocorps were my go to bands. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve mellowed out slightly haha”
Aaron – “I loved all of the early noughties three piece, post hardcore bands such as Reuben and InMe. That sound along with an agglomeration of modern rock, indie, metal and pop interests really defined who I was musically”
Kai – “Grew up in an orphanage, so I didn’t have many physical influences. My influences came more from tv shows: Goku, Ash Ketchum, Yugi, these were all big influences on me, and this really shows in my drumming style”
What made you want to be in a band?
Ciro – “I’ve wanted to be in a band ever since I was little, watching Bands like Flyleaf, who’s bass player (Pat Seals) inspired me to go out and play bass because of how crazy he goes on stage I was like wow that’s so cool I want to do that! The cool thing is now I have him as a friend on Instagram and he always goes around like my bass stuff which I always get a buzz from”
Kai – “In Sonic Underground, Manic the hedgehog plays the drums. Ever since seeing the intro for the very first time, I wanted to play like Manic because Manic is green and green is my favourite colour”
Aaron – “Personally I’ve never not wanted to be in a band, I’ve always idolised rock bands since I was a teenager and even before I ever heard of that kind of music as a kid, I’m sure I wanted to be like a Robbie Williams or something!”
Describe your band in 3 words.
Aaron – “Fun (in a dark, therapeutic way), Big (for a three piece) & Diverse (we’re a band of many elements)”
Ciro – “Heavy! Mellow & Melodic!”
Kai – “Really really nice”
Can you tell us a bit about your demos?
Aaron – “We’ve got a few tunes on our SoundCloud page and you can also listen on YouTube. We’ve written tons of songs but initially wanted each song that we’ve demo’d to have a completely diffident feel, so we’ve recorded a pop rock song, a slower soppy number, an all-out dirty punk banger and even a cover to show our versatility, purely on the basis of getting our full range of sounds out there”
What makes your band stand out from others?
Aaron – “People who’ve heard our stuff think it’s really different and can’t pick out another band that we sound like. and neither can I! I struggle to define our sound, but we’ve got elements of pop, punk, rock, grunge and folk music due to our varied influences”
Kai – “I think we’re the first politically-charged Sonic Underground inspired band”
What are your plans for the rest of 2018?
Aaron – “We plan on sharpening our sound even further by continuing to practice every week. We want to gig lots towards the back end of the year and even look at getting in a studio, so we can release something proper”
Kai – “I’m going to be playing my drums”
If your band had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you like it to be?
Aaron – “Probably Kai’s rock and roll bandana”
Kai – “Or being devastatingly handsome”
Anything else you’d like to add?
Aaron – “Yeah, we’ve released some new tunes over at SoundCloud so head over and listen. Also, search and follow us on Instagram, Facebook and twitter for big things to come!”
Kai – “I just want to say thank you for this interview, it really opens the doors for us little guys ;)”
Ciro – “Keep an eye out for us!”
