Taylor Grey is a gifted American songwriter, singer, and recording artist who first burst onto the music scene in 2016, the same year she started her undergraduate degree at Stanford University. Driven by introspection and emotive delivery, the 22 year-old Northern California native has been building a name for herself as a energetic performer in today’s contemporary pop landscape, having already shared the stage with the likes of Flo Rida, Fall Out Boy, Walk the Moon, Sabrina Carpenter, Jake Miller, O-Town, Ryan Cabrera, The Vamps, and New Hope Club, among others. Taylor has released one studio album (Space Case/2017) via Kobalt Music Group, which went on two went two Independent Music Awards in 2018, and one studio EP (GREY/2018) that has been featured on some of the major playlists such as Spotify’s Pop Sauce. All while working to get her major in Psychology, might we add.
Taylor was kind enough to answer a few questions for us, here is what she had to say.
Growing up who was your musical influences?
“Growing up, I was very inspired by female icons like Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, and Taylor Swift. But I was also obsessed with bands with really melancholy songs like The Fray, Five for Fighting, Hoobastank, and Snow Patrol. And then when I started writing my own music and became more of an edgy, sad, artsy kid, I was obsessed with Marina and the Diamonds, Lana Del Rey, and Florence and the Machine”
Where does your idea for songs come from?
“I’ll take seeds of truth from experiences in my life and then create more cohesive storylines. But they are all based on true emotions I feel. Once I went on a date at 8 pm on a Tuesday and that date and therefore that lyric spurred an entire song”
Describe your music in three words.
“Sad girl pop”
Any funny/interesting gig stories?
“At a showcase show I did, the opener had a whole group of friends with them and they all stood in the front row and danced like crazy the entire time. They were all 6-foot men just running and jumping around, creating a mosh pit, and it created such an awesome, infectious energy”
What has been your best/worst gig?
“As a fairly unknown artist, it can be difficult because sometimes people who do not know me personally think I don’t know what I’m talking about. At one gig, I asked for more vocal in my in-ears during soundcheck and was told that I didn’t know what I was talking about and that’d I’d be fine on stage. Low and behold, 2 songs into my set, I still couldn’t hear my vocals at all and asked for my vocals to be turned up while on stage (it was an intimate venue so I could pull that off, but if it happens at big venues you just have to deal with it which is nerve-wracking!)”
What would you say the music scene is like where you are from?
“The Bay Area has so many great musicians that come from here! I wish there were more live shows down in the peninsula where I go to school though!”
What’s your favourite venue to play in?
“Literally any GA venue. When people are standing and dancing around, the energy is incomparable”
New single, any new eps/singles coining out soon?
“Maybe ;). I’m so excited about the reaction to my new single Intentionally, so I can’t wait to write a ton of new material this summer!”
Any other gigs coming up?
“Yes!! I actually just announced that I will be joining New Hope Club for the US/Canada leg of their Love Again World Tour. A few dates are already sold out, so definitely suggest grabbing tickets sooner than later 🙂 I’ll definitely be doing meet n greets too”
Plans for the rest of 2019?
“Work on being a better writer, a better performer, and a better person”
