Spending the past few years honing her songwriting skills and collaborating with a slew of talented producers, ELIZZA is now bringing her talent to the world. Taking equal inspiration from pop icons such as SIA and Dua Lipa, and RnB artists like Raye and Jorja Smith, ELIZZA distils her breadth of influences down into a focused, unique, and deeply meaningful style. Now this exceptional artist comes to the fore once again with her latest single, “Can’t Quit”.

ELIZZA answered a few questions, here’s what she had to say.

Growing up who were your musical influences? “It would be really tough for me to pick one but as I was getting serious about music, in my early teens, Joss Stone was my biggest influence as I absolutely loved her music and I still do. I also listened to a lot of Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jackson. Besides modern music, I believe that my education in classical music has also largely influenced my work. Everything I have learned, been through has influenced my music. The fundamentals of songwriting, vocal technique, live performance skills, the music business – all this knowledge have helped me immensely in my music career”

Where do your ideas for songs come from? “My songs are inspired by my personal experiences in my everyday life, the people who surround me. Sometimes a vision can develop while I’m walking home or going about my busy day in London. As long as I have my phone to record melodies and lyric ideas, I’m good. I also like to write sitting by the piano or having someone else playing an instrument and jamming. In that way, we usually come up with some good ideas which could become full-fledged songs. Then again, these ideas, concepts and sometimes the full songs get honed while I’m in the studio with a producer. That’s exactly why I love the process of songwriting and singing, it’s like this adventure, so much can happen from the vision to when the song is released. All in all, it’s how I translate my experiences”

Describe your music in three words. “Vivid, poetic, romantic”

Any funny/interesting gig stories? “Every time I perform live I get to meet new people and connect with them on a different level. Each gig is interesting in its own way and I love to perform live. But if I had to choose one – it was a gig in my hometown Riga, performing to so many people I knew personally.. it just felt like a totally different experience. In London, I get to play in front of audiences I’ve never seen before but in Riga, it felt so personal, intimate and memorable”

What has been your best gig? “The best for me is when you play to an audience and you can look them in the eyes and see that your music makes them feel something and moves them. I can’t describe how happy it makes me feel!”

What would you say the music scene is like where you’re based? “The London music scene is unlike any other place. London is made up of people from all over the world, their music sensibilities and tastes and I ab absolutely love it. When all of this melts together, it creates this unique London sound. I think of London a global music project, that’s why the whole world can relate to it”

You have a new single out called ‘Can’t Quit’ can you tell us about it? “I wrote “Can’t Quit” about this intense connection with someone which is beautiful but also so overpowering that you feel helpless sometimes. The song is about this massive dopamine rush – this overwhelming feeling you experience when you are just mad for someone. The attachment is so intense and deep that you can’t shake it off even if you want to. Although all of us are different in our emotional intensity, I’m one of those people who either feel a lot or nothing at all”

What is your favourite venue to play? “Koko, O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Scala”

Tell us about your music? “I experiment with my sound a lot, as I listen to a lot of pop, RnB, electro music and I don’t think my music is in any one particular genre. What I love about music and songwriting is that my sound and style evolves as I evolve. That is very important to me – to keep making progress. I certainly think that some of my songs can be classified as my poetry as I do pay a lot of attention to storytelling when I write my lyrics. Overall, my sound is my personality – dreamy, poetic, vivid, romantic, honest, dedicated and energetic”

Any other gigs coming up? “My next live performance will be in January 2020. Stay tuned for upcoming events on my social media”

What are your plans for 2019/2020? “I’m fully focused on spending the last two months of this year writing new music and doing live performances. I will be releasing more music at the beginning of 2020 and the next year will definitely be full of music and new surprises, more details coming soon”

Any other information you would like us to add to the interview? “Thanks to all of you for the support on my new single ‘Can’t Quit’, and a special thanks to my producer J.AR.J. Keep streaming it and feel free to connect with me. X”
