Yxngxr1’s latest EP ‘I Don’t Suit Hats’ strengthened his stature as a singular voice for 2020, resulting in new artist profiles from The Line of Best Fit and Spindle while thrusting his monthly Spotify listeners in excess of 500,000 and Instagram followers to almost 100k. Today, Yxngxr1 shares his second EP of the year, ‘YELLOW, YELLOW, YELLOW’ via EMPIRE.
Here’s what he had to say when we got a chance to ask some questions.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
“Definitely Lil peep, Tyler the creator, Juice wrld and dominic fike in the past couple of years. Before that it was bands like Busted and Mcfly from the 00’s and 10’s. Can’t beat a bit of the naughtiest”.
What has been your best gig?
“I’ve never actually played a gig ever, but I’ve seen brockhampton play live and they were amazing! I remember going home and just spamming their music for months after”.
Can you tell us a bit about your music?
“It talks a lot about relationships and nostalgia. I really wanted to capture what i was feeling at those times in a bunch of songs because I know people could relate to it. It’s the type of music I would listen to so thats why i wanted to make it. I wanted to have my own sound. This EP is definitely my favourite bunch of songs i’ve ever made. I think I’m going to sit with these songs for a long time”.
Can you describe your music in 3 words?
“Sad but nostalgic”
What makes your music stand out?
“I think it’s just something people can relate to on a human level. There’s no flexing or talking about how many cars or houses I’ve got. It’s just music I like to make and it’s cool that people fuck with that”.
What are your plans for the rest of 2020?
“I want to go back to america and visit LA to see what it’s like out there. It seems so dreamy from the movies and tv shows. I want to do shows too but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening anytime soon. I think putting out consistent music is the main focus though”.
If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?
“Being something that doesn’t die out. I want people in hundreds of years to be playing yxngxr1 and actually giving to it. That would be such a sick feeling that after you die people are still giving to the music”.
I know it’s difficult to say at the moment but do you have any gig’s coming up?
“Nothing coming up as far as I know, but I want to tour this EP and the ep’s we did before. I want to meet the people who listen to the music!!!!”
