After years singing and writing lyrics and performing in the region with my band, lockdown given Marq the opportunity to work on solo material and some exciting collaborations. Marq says “I’ve never been that confident writing my own music and lyrics but after sharing some of my songs with friends and fellow musicians they encouraged me to share it with everyone and strike out as a solo artist.”

Here’s what Marq had to say when we got a chance to ask some questions.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

“A lot of American soul acts from the 80s like Change  and the SOS Band then producers like Jam and Lewis and then Nelee Hooper and Timbaland.”

How do you find the process from writing lyrics to creating a song?

“I enjoy it and often it can be a real release the music often comes first then I can focus on the lyrics.  I like just sitting there and experimenting with soundcsapes.”

You’ve organised musical events and performed for over a decade, now you have finally got the confidence to release your solo material, how have you found the experience so far?

“I have been pretty overwhelmed by the positive response and its really built my confidence.”

Can you tell us a bit about your music?

“Yes I’ve got 3 more tracks in the pipeline after Wildlife and possibly more if I can raise funds. I’ve got an electro 80s synth mid tempo track called “Bad Bones” coming soon, then another big electro anthemic track called “I’m Coming Home ” and another more electronic dance and soul orientated track called “Crazy Fool” all are produced by the amazing Simon Ellis, he has worked with some pretty big names and I am so lucky to have this opportunity.”

Can you describe your music in 3 words?

“Funky, electro, anthems.”

What makes your music stand out?

“There is an 80’s tinge to my voice and music but a heavy bass and electro influence to add depth and soul and it’s not trying to be a clever experiment, just good fun and electronic pop music.”

What are your plans for the rest of 2020?

“I’m writing more songs and looking at getting out there to perform them in the new year  but maybe get  a few days off  in the Christmas period to rest and recharge ready to go out there with more music for 2021.”

If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?

“That I also had an impressive collection of Ikea pencils! No, really that I wanted a better world for people than this one we have now with foodbanks and suffering.”

Do you have any gig’s coming up?

“Not now due to Covid 19 but I am planning online gigs soon and proper gigs for next year, So watch this space.”
