Aby Coulibaly followed her visionary debut ‘Taurus’ with her second track ‘Maybe’, and in the process boosted her buzzworthy reputation with praise from Complex, Gal-dem and Wonderland. Her playlist support continues to gain traction, with highlights to date including R&B UK, dazed and Boho + Chill at Spotify plus Chilled R&B at Apple Music

Here’s what Aby had to say when we got the chance to ask her some questions.

Tell us about your new single Long Nights..

“Long Nights is about women who tear each other down instead of lifting each other up. I wrote it the day after I had a weird encounter with a girl who treated me badly for no reason and it was so crazy because she actually didn’t know me.. The song was inspired by this encounter and it made me think about women competing with each other instead of empowering each other. This wasn’t my first time experiencing something like this with a girl, so I just wrote a song about it”.

You set up your own record label – tell us about Chamomile Records..

“Chamomile actually came about unintentionally. We wanted to be independent and release on our own terms and just have the freedom to be the artists we want to be so we came up with the idea of setting up our own label”.

You’re a really strong role model for young girls -do you think it’s important to encourage women to be independent?

“Absolutely. I think in society we’re taught to find a man that can look after and provide for us when in reality we can look after ourselves and shouldn’t have to depend on someone else to do that for us”.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

“A lot of 90s/00s r&b/rap. I grew up listening to Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, destiny’s child,Rihanna, boyz to men, Eminem”

What has been your best gig?

“I haven’t got to do any gigs just yet but my favorite performance so far was for the festival of now which was an online pre recorded gig. Yes”.

Describe your music in 3 words

“Catchy, Relatable, Feel good”

What’s the music scene like in Dublin at the moment?

“It’s growing rapidly, so many talented artists emerging and it’s so great to see”.

What are your plans for the rest of 2021?

“Releasing more music for sure and I plan to release a project at some stage”.

If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?

“My bomb ass pasta dishes”

Who are you listening to at the moment?

“Been listening to a lot of Amaarae , H.E.R and Tom Misch”.
