It has been an impressive few years for Warrington band The A.V Club, who formed in 2018. They have seen waves of success since their debut EP ‘Youthful Illusions’, selling out gigs, appearing on BBC Introducing, and are often featured on Radio X. They have even been tipped to be John Kennedy’s “Ones To Watch”! Made up of four talented members – lead singer and guitarist Joe Banks, drummer and percussionist Oli Thomas, bassist Daniel Turton, and synth, keys and vocalist Freya Hann – the band recently released their new single ‘Mistakes’ on 5th March 2021.
Now, I’ll admit that I hadn’t heard of the band before I was asked to write this review, so I’m going into this entirely blind with no expectations or preconceived ideas of what is coming my way. All I know is what you’ve just read, so this should be exciting! Let’s go!
As soon as I hit play, I’m greeted with a synthetic intro which instantly reminds me of all things 80s and retro video games! The strong vocals quickly make an appearance, singing about how our storyteller wishes he could redo a relationship and not make the same mistakes this time around. The lyrics are pretty simple but work super effectively, and as we build in momentum towards the super catchy chorus, you can’t help but bop your head along! The track as a whole is very 80s sounding in the best possible way (fully bring that era back, I’d be happy!) and is something I can see myself listening to a lot! Give it another few listens and I’ll be singing along like I’m part of the band, I’m sure! What I will say is too, considering the song is 3 minutes long, it passes by in the blink of an eye because the pace of the song is just perfect and the enjoyment from listening is that high! I loved it!
All in all, this is a brilliant song and I’m definitely interested in listening to more by The A.V Club, especially if they continue with this electronic, indie-pop sound! Great job!
