The Swedish-American singer-songwriter Lexi Berg has enjoyed a wave of discovery in recent months. Her haunting ballad ‘What If’ (produced with Faris Badwan of The Horrors) features in the critically acclaimed Netflix film ‘Pieces of A Woman’. The film has remained in the spotlight throughout award season, picking up countless key nominations at ceremonies including the Oscars, the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.
We got a chance to ask Lexi some questions, here’s what she had to say.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
“I grew up in Sweden, which has such a pop music culture, so I listened to a lot of pop. My mother would play classical music in the house, but in the car we would sing along to Abba, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. I think all of these sounds have greatly influenced my writing”.
How has the past year been for you and your creativity?
“In the beginning of the lockdown in 2020 I was forced to be in self-isolation for a week as my flatmate had Covid. I started writing a song a day. It was a sort of emotional release and therapy when the world around us was falling apart. It fuelled me to want to create more”.
Tell us about your new single “Into The Sea” and the inspiration behind it
“Into the Sea is an ode to nature. In the chaos of 2020 many of us locked down in cities relied on our daily escape into a park, or a perch under a tree. When I finally managed to get back to Sweden I went straight to the ocean and it felt as though slowly the water washed away a lot of the pain and loneliness that so many of us felt in 2020. I was reminded that nature can heal us”.
We love the video.. what can you tell us about the making of it?
“The shoot itself was pretty gruelling! We shot it in Margate over 3 days and the combination of the freezing winds and pink supermoon made the whole experience a bit mad! But in the end Drew Cox, my director extraordinaire, as well as my incredible team made my whole vision for the video come to life”.
Can you describe your music in 3 words?
“Dreamy hopeful emotional”.
If you could collaborate with any artist who would that be?
“I would kill to work with Benny and Bjorn from Abba!! Or Stevie Nicks. They are legends and heroes of mine”.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
“I have my classic playlists but then I also love exploring new music, roaming through Spotify playlists such as Fresh Finds. I usually find one song that hits me, then listen to it 100 times until I’ve almost ruined it and then move on to the next”.
If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?
“I try to be kind and a good friend. So I’d like to be remembered as someone who treated people with kindness”.
