Joseph Reuben has battled against the odds to commence his solo career. He first came to attention several years ago with his soulful take on Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’. But just as he began to build traction, he required emergency surgery which resulted in the devastating news that he may never sing again. Instead he channelled his talents into a successful vocation as a score composer for film, TV, theatre and ballet. But after years of gruelling vocal rehabilitation, Joseph is now able to step back into the spotlight and focus on his long overdue solo work.
Here’s what Joseph had to say when we got a chance to ask him some questions.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
“I grew up with a lot music around me. My mom is a singer-songwriter so she was a big influence, always playing music around us. The Beatles, 90s & 2000s pop music and later on I started listening to lots of film soundtracks”.
Tell us about your new single Dreamland
“Dreamland is about not being able to let go of someone emotionally. A relationship I had many years ago ended but I felt like I was stuck in the past, my own dreamland”.
You were told you might never sing again – how did that make you feel and what inspired you to get back into music again?
“I was pretty heartbroken. I was in alot of physical pain so it felt like It was something I just wasn’t meant to be doing. I never stopped making music for a second though. I just focused more on composing and producing and over the years slowly began gaining my confidence back with my voice and 2 years ago decided it was what I needed to put all my focus in”.
Describe your music in 3 words?
“Cinematic, atmospheric, emotive”.
If you could collaborate with any other artist – who would that be?
“Bernard Herrmann – his orchestrations were like no one else’s”.
Tell us about your Song A Day project?
“I began setting myself a goal to write a full song every day in just 1 hour. By the end of the week I found I was writing really strong ideas because I was free of judgement. So I decided to continue for a full month but share the process with fans on social media allowing them to vote for their favourites that would later be released”.
If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?
What’s next for Joseph Reuben?
“My EP release in October, some epic music videos and a mainland tour in China at the end of the year with my friend Wolf Colony”.
