Strange Souvenirs blend influences from 80s new wave, 90s trip hop & shoegaze, post-millennial electronica & indie with science fiction soundtracks, video games and nuggets of nerd culture into a shizoid selection of danceable, delicate and disorienting songs.
Strange Souvenirs are Thomas Juhnke and Matthias Juhnke. Together with producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Cameron James Laing, they are currently completing their first album at The Famous Gold Watch Studio in Weissensee Berlin.
“Nothing2” is a jilted yet strangely joyful sprawl about feeling nothing at all and everything all at once. A five and a half minute emotional outburst full of misery & magic, gut-wrenching punches, beautiful bruises, abrupt endings & unexpected new beginnings.
The song opens with the sound of acoustic guitar and keyboards, accompanied by Matthias’ melancholy vocals. You can’t help but become hooked within seconds, this track will have you listening to every word and sound.
Gradually, the music changes and gives a more upbeat feel, though the melancholy undercurrent remains. It’s unique sound really grabs the listeners attention and helps to create something that you can’t help but love. The combination of sounds and lyrics is fun, fresh and exciting to hear.
I was impressed with this incredible track and cant wait to hear more.
10/10
