Named one of BBC Introducing in the East Midlands’ most played artists of 2019 and 2020, Michael Vickers is a British singer-songwriter from Leicester. His combination of indie-rock, pop, and heartfelt, anecdotal lyrics delivered with a raw, rap inspired vocal has had audiences describing his music as “clever, captivating, beautiful, vivacious, unique and spellbinding.”
After a hectic release schedule in 2019 and 2020, losing a manager due to unforeseen circumstances, not to mention the dreaded Coronavirus which put everyone’s lives on hold, it was the right time to take a well earnt break from releasing music. I needed time to focus on myself, although in the back of my mind I hoped that I would, eventually, return with an EP of my strongest work to date. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t too long before I desperately wanted to write again, so, naturally, I began penning some lyrics.
Don’t Stop was written during the first few weeks of ‘new normality’ after Covid had kept us in isolation for what seemed an eternity. Being from Leicester – the City with the highest infection rate and therefore the strictest lockdown in the UK – it seemed like we would never be able to leave the house again. I had been on a boozy all-dayer (the first in some time) and woken up to an angry girlfriend, who I had met just before lockdown and moved in with. She wasn’t quite aware of my habits. I felt it was the perfect single to release after a break, especially given how the country was feeling at the time – fed up. There wasn’t really a lot to actually write about and it just seemed to capture the boredom everyone was going through. When I tested positive for Covid-19 I realised that, unlike the other singles on this EP, which would receive professionally produced music videos, a DIY video would fit perfectly for this.
The whole single is so lyrically skilful and has such a catchy and unique sound you can’t help but fall in love with. The laid-back feel around the track, along with the brilliant vocals for me had my full attention from the very beginning.
This single for me has a slight Easy Life, The Street feel to it but with Michael’s own unique twist. This single is impossible not to listen to from beginning to end, Michael has created something that sounds so special and will awake every hair on the back of your neck.
‘Don’t Stop’ is actually part of something much bigger, it’s the first single from the upcoming EP – ‘Words To That Effect’. A brilliant single and I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP.
