When a 21-year-old songwriter is heralded as a major new talent by two icons of British music, it’s time to take note. Noel Gallagher has not only championed the young Geordie, but he also produced and played guitar on his track ‘Where’s My Family Gone’.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
“Well I was brought up on a cocktail of Oasis, The Jam and The Cranberries! Of course when I was able to decide what I wanted to listen to I went through a bit of sour patch and listened to JLS… this didn’t last long”.
We love your new single You Don’t Belong, what can you tell us about the writing/recording process?
“The song was written originally as an acoustic type ballad.. it was only when the acoustic guitar wasn’t fitting right with the band that I decided to indie-rockify … the studio process was great fun, experimenting with synths is something I’ve never done before”.
You’ve just signed with Pete Doherty’s Strap Originals Label..how did that come about? And what was it like touring with Pete?
“It was the first gig after lockdown and we were due to support Peter acoustically at the Riverside in Newcastle. I was astonished to spot Peter at the side of the stage really enjoying my music! After the gig he gave me a great reception back stage and we began talking about football, music and Newcastle. I have a great relationship with both Peter and the label, I’m incredibly comfortable and excited about them being part of this project. A few weeks after the tour Strap were in close contact with my manager, Leigh, and decided to offer us a contract. Great time lie ahead”.
Describe your music in 3 words
“Drop Dead Gorgeous”
If you could collaborate with any other artist – who would that be and why?
“I’m actually going to say Jarvis Cocker! I’m obviously a huge Weller, Sam Fender, Bob Dylan fan etc … but first and foremost I obsess with lyrics and there’s not many lyrics as poignant and story telling as Jarvis’s”.
Where do you get your inspiration from when writing songs?
“In the early days of writing it would always come from my experiences … now however being out on tour and meeting all these great people, I’m inspired all the time … I’m writing a lot more observational lyrics these days as a pose to philosophical ones”.
Have you got any gigs coming up?
“yes! We’ve got a big tour to announce soon as well my biggest ever headline show!! We’re also joining the Sheep Dogs and The Sherlocks on their tours in coming months. As well as this we have a number of festivals and Noel Gallagher support slots to play!”
