Equally as influenced by inspirational current artists such as Kacey Musgraves and HAIM as she is by the timeless sounds of Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell, 18-year-old newcomer Maya Lane possesses a talent for songwriting that’s rarely heard from such a young artist. Maya today shares the official video for her debut single ‘Still The Same’ as she builds towards the release of her debut EP later this year.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
“I grew up listening to such a wide range of music, from rock, hip hop, pop to reggae. However, the storytelling lyrics and effortlessly beautiful melodies of 60s/ 70s country and folk, really drew me in. I take a lot of inspiration from artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, and also current artists like Kacey Musgraves, HAIM, Harry Styles”.
Tell us about your new single Still The Same…
“I wrote ‘Still The Same’ with Jonathan Quarmby just after the first lockdown, in 2020. I tend to use my own experiences and feelings to write song, but also love throwing myself into imaginary scenarios and getting lost in another world. That’s what happened with ‘Still The Same’, the song takes you through the story of a breakup, and reflects on how everything around has changed but you’re still the same”.
Describe your music in 3 words
“Authentic, Timeless and Heartfelt”
If you could collaborate with any other artist – who would that be?
“This is probably one of the hardest questions to answer as there are so many artists I dream of collaborating with! I would love to collaborate with HAIM, they are so incredibly creative and just seem like so much fun”.
What songwriters do you really admire?
“I really admire Joni Mitchell. I’ve always loved how she combines her descriptive songwriting and melodies to tell stories so vividly. I think she does this beautifully in one of my all times favourite songs, ‘Little Green”.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
“I managed to get tickets to see Harry Styles in June, so I’ve been listening to his albums (just to make sure I know all the words before the concert haha). I’ve also been loving the band Trousdale, their harmonies are insane!”
If you had to be remembered for one thing apart from your music what would you want it to be?
“Being a genuine and kind person is super important. I always hope that people can be completely themselves and comfortable around me. Although, If i’m being superficial, I would love to be known for one day having the best vintage clothes collection! I’m obsessed with vintage clothing and forever building my collection of unique pieces. I just love how every piece tells a story”.
Have you got any gigs coming up?
“I can’t give anything away at the moment, but make sure you are following my socials to be the first to see any announcements!”
