where you’re from and just a bit about you.

“I’m Kyle Chatham. I’m an artist and singer/songwriter originally from the west coast of Scotland – now living in South London. I make music that’s broadly based in the indie folk/alternative genre that has elements of ambient electronic and soundscape textures. I spend most of my time creating new things where I can and I spend the rest of the time worrying about how much I’m not creating”.

What is your musical background?

“I was always into music from day one really. I was very receptive to music whenever it was playing on the radio and perhaps more so when I could see performances on TV. Eventually my parents bought me a drum kit when I was 5 and I had some lessons. I suppose I always thought that’s what I would do until I started teaching myself guitar and writing little ideas when I was about 10 or 11. Later down the line I got more into home recording and production and most of what I have released up until only recently has been self produced”.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

“In the early days it was my dads tapes and CDs of Foreigner and Journey with a few other classic rock tunes in some compilation CDs. I started then getting into my brothers music which was more 90s alternative rock based. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were all massive for me. Once I started getting into music by myself the list grew endless”.

What made you want to be an artist?

“I’m not entirely sure. You have heroes and influences of course who you feel like you’d maybe like to have a similar trajectory and life too I suppose. But really,  It doesn’t feel like a choice in a lot of ways – it’s as if it has to come out of me to this degree and more. Really though I’m not very good at anything else, and I believe in the music I make quite heavily which is always a good driver to keep going forward”.

What has been your best gig?

“I played as a finalist in the 2019 Ivors Scholarship competition. I only played one song as each finalist did, but it was to an audience of people who could be considered industry gatekeepers to some degree and getting to speak to them afterwards and hearing positive feedback was a really great experience”.

Can you tell us a bit about your music?

“Yeah I just released a new single called ‘Valentine’ at the end of January, which is the best a release of mine has done so far. I’m also releasing a new single, ‘Once More Round Your Heart’ on the 25th of March so look out for that one”.
