Enter alt-rock band Lady Silver. With a news-worthy song and video combination. Their incredibly catchy new single ‘News of the World’ is remarkably witty and acts as the perfect introduction to a band doing things differently in the rock landscape. Lady Silver’s songs are loaded with satirical charm, often with a sprinkling of dry humour. The upcoming album ‘Circus Pop’, from which NOTW is taken, explores the absurdity of fake news via a visual and lyrical tragi-comic stance. The video for this is unforgettable; using deepfake technology the song’s message is brought to viewers via the likes of Kim K and Elon Musk, which was made possible thanks to renowned deepfake mastermind Roy Kahalani.
“We began recording our album at the peak of the pandemic, when you virtually weren’t allowed to leave your house. We created our own ‘band bubble’ and met in an underground studio. To avoid police on the way we managed to get hold of a couple of jackets branded with a delivery company logo. On the brightside – the lack of outside stimuli and distractions made us focus almost exclusively on the artistic process.”
‘Circus Pop’ is a tapestry of current societal themes. Aside from NOTW, other songs tackle
the rise of the influencer, hater culture, online dating and some other topics that all revolve around the true pandemic of our times – the obsession with fame and success as defined by modern pop culture and the self-centeredness that comes with those aspirations. As for the name of the album? The band explains: “It’s a play on words and a joke. Like a new musical genre and also a fizzy drink you drink at a circus or a festival.” Creating music out of their homeland Tel Aviv, Israel, Lady Silver comprises of drummer Nir Hakim, keyboardist-bassist Gal Motiuk, guitarist Daniel Krichevsky and frontman, vocalist-guitarist Max Spon. Interestingly, Max spent 5 years living and studying in Manchester, and of course his lyrics are in English, one of his three mother tongue languages. In fact, Max is quite the cinephile and literature fan, and so Lady Silver’s music will readily appeal to music lovers after some depth.
This single packs a punch from the very beginning and I believe it’s the best single the band have created so far, from the opening verses your transported to another level with the incorporation of strings, drums and vocals. The chorus will no doubt have you singing along. – a basic guarantee that it will be a success live with a crowd’s backing. It’s a quality song that you can tell has been put together with a great deal of care and attention to detail. They have managed to maintain their ability to bang out instantly memorable tracks and there is no doubt that this track will fit perfectly into their already impressive set list.
